Relocating to North Carolina

Moving to the Triangle & Johnston County

I moved here from New York and started over, so I know how much you're juggling. Here's an honest, features-only look at the towns I serve, plus the basics on taxes, schools and getting settled.

The region at a glance

  • Research Triangle Park: about 7,000 acres with 385+ companies and 55,000+ employees, between Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill.
  • RDU airport: a record 15.6 million passengers and 80 nonstop destinations in 2025.
  • Four mild seasons: NOAA 1991–2020 normals at RDU show January highs near 52°F and July highs near 91°F, with about 5 inches of snow a year.
  • Taxes: a flat 3.99% NC income tax for 2026; property tax set county by county (Johnston $0.51, Wake $0.5371, Durham $0.5792, Orange $0.6805 per $100), plus any town rate.
  • Getting around: I-40, I-440, I-540/NC 540, US-70/I-42 and I-95; GoTriangle regional buses ($2.50), GoRaleigh ($1.25) and fare-free Chapel Hill Transit; Amtrak in Raleigh, Cary, Durham and Selma.

How school assignment works here

In North Carolina, public schools are organized mostly by county, and assignment comes from your exact address, not the town name or ZIP code. I don't rank or recommend schools. Instead, use the official lookup tools and confirm with the district:

Your first 60 days

  • Get an NC driver license within 60 days of becoming a resident (if you drive), then title and register your vehicles with NC insurance.
  • Emissions inspections apply in certain counties, including Wake, Durham and Johnston.
  • Set up utilities by address: Duke Energy, a town electric system (Apex, Wake Forest, Clayton, Smithfield, Selma, Benson and others) or a co-op; town, county or well/septic water.
  • Register to vote (regular deadline is 25 days before an election; NC requires photo ID).
  • Switch your withholding to NC (Form NC-4).

Moving somewhere other than NC? I personally serve the Triangle and Johnston County, and I can refer you to a trusted agent anywhere in the country.
